RE: Need Help Buying Our First Travel Trailer

R-Visions has a great Low Profile ultra light line. When we were shopping around I wanted to get am Antigua (Starcraft) 305QBS The GVWR was I believe 7100 and dry was 5100lbs. But then I saw the TC30QBSS with a dry of 4439 and GVWR of 6,027lbs. They were identical floor plans They do not have Quad Bunks but they have a full bed on the bottom (I think it’s a full) and a standard size bunk on the top. With 6, you would need to utilize the dinette as a bed and use the sofa bed. I liked the R-visions TC30BHDS the best but a bit heavy for me. I think Jayco makes a Nice quad bunk that’s fairly light. I just posted this part in another topic. Rules of thumb do not always apply to every setup; I noticed wheel base mentioned which many people overlook. One thing about the wheel base rule of thumb is there is another factor to consider, "low center of gravity". I am pulling a TC30QBSS with a suburban and it handles beautifully, but it’s a Low profile trailer “low center of gravity”. If I used the general rule of thumb I think I max out at 25’ with a wheel base of 130” My trailer is 31.7’ Another (general) rule of thumb is you want the GVWR of the trailer to be no more than 75% of your tow capacity, this is another rule of thumb that I have broken, the max for me should be 5400lbs GVWR, and I am at 6,000lbs although my tow capacity is 7,200lbs. Another issue is the GCVWR That is the total weight of both vehicles. Sometimes the GVWR of your tow vehicle can be exceeded but you still have play in your Tow Capacity, an example of this is a light duty suspension opposed to a heavy duty suspension both with the same towing capacity. It gets a bit confusing Just make sure you are comfortable with your choice. And you don’t skimp on Hitching equipment and a brake controller. Check to see if you have a tow package also.

RE: Leaky window

Mike I had a similar problem but mine leaked at the seal. The cutout for the window was so bad that the butyl seal could not do its job. I used a white silicone and have had no problems. I think for your application a clear silicone would work on the glass. Its what they use on fishtanks to seam the glass together.

RE: Seasonal non-electric site. Leave fridge on?

If its like my fridge, the use of the battery is in milliamps and is only used to open the gas valve. Look for phantom loads and I would also put kill switches on the radio and other power devices. Also what is a big marine battery?...I would suggest two 6 volt batteris in series and a good quality standalone charger to charge the batteries from the generator. If the solar panels have a decent output, that should be enough to keep youre batteries up to snuff barring any phantom loads.

RE: Portable Waste Tank - Opinions?

I use a 32 gallon 4 wheel tote and absolutely love it. I have a 30 gallon grey tank and the possibility of overfilling the tote is impossible. I tow it to the dumpstation pop on a clear elbow (no hoses) and position the elbow over the hole loosen the small cap pull the blade and thats it. Very easy to lift empty. The problem with a portable tank smaller than youre on board tank is it could result in a mess if youre not careful.

RE: Portable BBq

The campchef's have a modular system that works well... a bit pricey but check oput their site. I can cook for a dozen peeople on th griddle and have a 28 pot cup of coffe brewing. Then for dinner I can pop off the griddle and pop in the Grill box and boil a pot of soup on the side. Can even do a 14 lb turkey I love it because it eliminated 3 things I used to take camping...3 burner stove...a RVQ Grill...and a table. I have the pans and utensils hanging right on the grill.

RE: No tv when camping was I wrong.

I don’t think having Luxuries on board is a bad thing, hey I’m all for the “Condo on wheels” scenario. I am sure some can relate to the following statement that we heard a million times from our parents, “Go outside and play its beautiful”. I think a good portion of individuals feel that if you are around beautiful scenery, hiking trails, fishing areas Natural areas and many other things we don’t usually see on an every day basis, that you should try and enjoy that before the typical luxuries most of us enjoy at home. I have no problem kicking back and having some snacks and watch a movie with the kids, but not in place of enjoying the surroundings and what the area has to offer. I also have ordered Take out on my cell phone for pickup…it’s pretty hard to get a delivery guy to deliver at a campsite, but I will try next time out. Short Story For about 12 years I would go on an annual fishing trip in April with anywhere from 10-15 other guys to our hunting cabin in Waterville Pa, they never fished, we would hang out and drink beer and play horseshoes all day…ok that wasn’t so bad but then over the last 5 or so years that I have gone, they all decided the bar down the bottom of the mountain was better than hanging out and playing horseshoes. So we would sit in a smoky bar for about 6-8 hours a day…this I tired of real quick. I haven’t been on that trip in at least 6 years. I could not se me driving 240 miles to sit in a bar when I can walk to one around the corner from my house. I grew to dislike the trip; however the other guys still love it! Now I plan a fishing trip every year and we actually fish, hell we party too and enjoy the camaraderie and yes we watch movies. Heres a Blog of our recentl trip http://assateagucampingtrip2008.blogspot.com/ The key for me is to Prioritize My point is, “Enjoy your Family/Friends”, “Your Surroundings” and your “Luxuries”…in that order. Or all at the same time. To each his own, that’s what makes this a great forum, people sharing their opinions.

RE: No tv when camping was I wrong.

It seems the main issue would have been the parents showing up and giving the kids the DVD player after you had told them no. I would have sent it back. Now onto what I believe was youre second issue which would be the statement "We there to spend time as a family an enjoy the woods". This is a matter of preference, I too did not want the kids watching TV when its nice out, but I have found it extremely important to have a distraction for a 3 year old (now 6) so I would bring my laptop and put on winnie the pooh. Worked like a charm...and trust me all my fellow campers would rather not hear a 3 year old screaming for an hour. My new trailer has a 20" lcd tv with a DVD player and it has its advantages. Its still a good distraction for my 6 year old, it chills him out before bed. It was also handy on a couple of occasions when we had poor weather and were stuck indoors, of course we played games but we also enjoyed a family movie night. I still would have been upset for your parents not respecting your wishes. To each his own.

RE: Looking for a new BBQ

This is a letter from a Camp Chef Rep I believe they are both the same size. It weighs 83Lbs. I don't know what the dimensions are when its folded up because it really doesn't fold up, the legs just come off. Here are the dimensions that i have for it 18" x 44.5" x 14" And this was from the rep also The SPG90 comes with the bbq box and only has one side shelf,it also has removeable legs, the Pro90 doesn't come with the bbq box, it has two side shelves plus the windscreen and it has foldable legs. The BB90L will fit on the Pro90 and it will cover two burners. The recommended griddle for the Pro90 would be the SG90 or the Sg100. The SG90 will cover two burners and the SG100 will cover all three burners.
